The Adult School at Clare Road Meeting House was established in 1862. It was always a relatively small school. Its total membership, including both men and women, was 64 in 1886 and in 1901, 47. An afternoon class for women was established in 1907, and ran for over 80 years, before closing in 1988. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
